TimeTravelingBunny has submitted a theory about Pierre Chang (aka Marvin Candle) based on the video we saw from Comic-Con. Here's the theory:
Pierre Chang's Arm and Its Connection with "The Incident"
By TimeTravelingBunny
I know that most of you are familiar with The Swan Orientation Film from 1980. I am also sure that most of you have seen the most recent Comic Con video in which Candle/Halliwax revealed himself to be Pierre Chang. A lot of people have been mentioning that they noticed Chang looks at his arm when talking about The Purge in the Comic Con video. Keep in mind that if the generally accepted time line is indeed correct, then the Comic Con video was filmed in 1978, The Swan Video was filmed in 1980, and The Purge occurred in 1993.
Option A:
Now, remember in Season Two's finale, "Live Together, Die Alone," how Eko and Locke were hesitant about pushing the button? When they withheld from pushing the button, the electromagnetic anomaly caused certain metal objects in The Swan to become airborne because they were magnetically charged to the metal doors of The Hatch. Perhaps, sometime between 1978 and 1980, whatever member of the Dharma Initiative working in The Swan was hesitant to push the button while our friend Pierre Chang was in The Hatch. Because the electromagnetic energy had begun to build up and was not harnessed, metal objects within The Swan became airborne due to their attraction to the large magnet in The Hatch. What if some sort of sharp, metal, object was flying through the air, hit Pierre Chang's arm, and flat out severed it? This would 1) explain why Pierre Chang though it necessary to make a new Orientation Film for The Swan that mentions "The Incident" and 2) why Pierre Chang seems to have a prosthetic arm in The Swan Orientation Film.
Option B:
Although this theory is only possible if the Dharma Initiative built The Swan Station without knowing about the electromagnetic anomaly, I think it still makes great sense. So, here’s another way a connection between “The Incident” and Pierre Chang’s missing arm is possible. Maybe The Swan Station was originally built for exactly what Pierre Chang tells us in The Swan Orientation Film, psychological research. Suppose one day, sometime before 1980, Chang was conducting psychological research in The Swan, and the FIRST evidence of the electromagnetic anomaly was detected. This first sign of the anomaly could be significant enough to cause a sharp, metal object to be attracted to the metal doors and walls in The Hatch, which ultimately severs Chang’s arm while airborne. If this is the case, the Dharma Initiative placed the magnet in the Swan following “The Incident” due to Chang losing his arm. In sync with addition of the magnet to The Swan, the Dharma Initiative also added the button that must be pushed every 108 minutes.
